Clean Air Campaign cut in Perdue’s budget

See update in story!

Gov. Sonny Perdue’s proposed budget would reduce EPD funding to Clean Air Campaign, an Atlanta nonprofit that helps businesses and individuals to green their commutes, according to Southeast Green.

The Clean Air Campaign cut? A whopping $620,000, which has got to be a fair piece of the organization’s budget. I’ve put a note into Kevin Green et al at the Clean Air Campaign to see what’s up with that.

UPDATE: Green, the campaign’s executive director, stresses federal, state and private money all contribute toward the organization’s current $6.6 million budget. While the governor’s proposal would significantly reduce the state share of that, Green notes that “it’s early in the budget process. We’ve tightened our belts like everyone else has but the region’s traffic and air quality problems aren’t going away.”

The governor’s budget request also would cut $100,000 for environmental monitoring within the Department of Natural Resources, Southeast Green reports. In the state’s extremely tough budget situation — with the tax base eviscerated by so many special interest cuts and some legislators calling for even more cuts — restoring that funding has got to be diffcult.

NOTE: This article originally said state funding would be eliminated. That error has been corrected.
